History of Tanjungpinang


In the days before independence, Tanjungpinang central part of the Malay Kingdom in the form of the Sultanate, founded in XVI century. Historically, the central government based in Penyengat Island, had now become the location of cultural tourism as well as Malay cultural development center, the first king who ruled the Sultan Abdul Rahman, or known by the name of the Sultan of Riau. During 1722-1911, he ruled with justice and wisdom, so that the welfare of the people increased and in addition he also managed to run the government, so famous in the archipelago and the Peninsula region.

After the Sultan of Riau's death in year 1911, the kingdom was passed on by his descendants and the last king is king named Engku Jakfaar and his wife Princess Hamida.

During the Dutch colonial city's status as the Residency which is the center of governors of the cities located on islands in Riau Islands region, in the early days of independence the city into districts of Tanjung Pinang, and increased status to the City Administrative - Cape County Pinang through 2000, and so upgraded to the Autonomous City - City Tanjungpinang with Law No. 5 of 2001, on June 21, 2001 up to now.

Tanjungpinang definitive with the election of Mayor by the local parliament Tanjungpinang, then as an elected mayor for the first time, is Dra. Hj. Suryatati A. Manan became Head of the Region. He ruled from 2002 until now with the new government entered the age at age-6 years. Central government which was originally located in downtown Tanjungpinang in a densely populated settlement was later moved to Senggarang (the northern part of town) as the central government. This is intended to offset the gap of development and population density that had been centered in the old city (west of the city).
