TEMPO Interactive, Bintan - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inaugurated the first phase of construction of an integrated tourism area in the Gulf Sebong, Lagoi Sebong Village, Bintan regency, Riau Islands, Saturday (26 / 2).

President: Riau Islands Will Be the New Economic Center

Tanjungpinang (AFP) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono optimistic Province will become the new economic center, so they can compete with Singapore.

In the days before independence, Tanjungpinang central part of the Malay Kingdom in the form of the Sultanate, founded in XVI century. Historically, the central government based in Penyengat Island, had now become the location of cultural tourism as well as Malay cultural development center, the first king who ruled the Sultan Abdul Rahman, or known by the name of the Sultan of Riau. During 1722-1911, he ruled with justice and wisdom, so that the welfare of the people increased and in addition he also managed to run the government, so famous in the archipelago and the Peninsula region.

After the Sultan of Riau's death in year 1911, the kingdom was passed on by his descendants and the last king is king named Engku Jakfaar and his wife Princess Hamida.
